Assignment 1, Step 2

Assignment 1, Step 2

For step 2 of assignment one, we have to discuss how to enlarge our digital footprint.

There are a few options I will use to make my name found on Google.

  1. Meta Tags
I incorporated words in the head section of my website; words that people would most likely search if trying to find me on the website. I included some key words such as, julia rao, image arts, ryerson, new media etc. that will make it easier for one to find my image arts website on google. Once my website is found, it provides a link to my flickr account (and in the future, more websites will be there) and this will help my digital footprint grow.
  2. Include Keywords!
Including words in the body of my website that people will search will make it easier for my website to appear on google. Like I included in my meta tags, i included some words that people would search if trying to find me online. As the website becomes more develops, I will change the content of the home page, but I’m going to keep these keywords (and maybe add a few more around the website) in the body of the home page.
  3. Incoming links/ Mutual Links
The more incoming links I have to my website, the more popular it will become. The more popular my website is, the easier it will be to find it on google. In order to make it more popular, I am going to post my website URL on several of my accounts. Several classmates and I are going to post each other’s websites around our accounts and websites (these are mutual links). The more incoming links/ mutual links that a website has, the more likely it is that it will show up on google when the key words are searched.
  4. Out text/ Using Text
Out text are the descriptions and titles  that are associated the pictures on the website. If you scroll over the picture on my homepage, you will see a text box appear, saying julia rao, copper bowl. I included my name in this because it will help google find my name and I also included the name of the image. By doing this, and including the keywords on my other accounts (flickr, youtube etc.) google will be able to find my name, and my website better.

Assignment #2, Part 1

So this is the Part 1 of the website assignment. I examined 2 websites, one good and one bad.

The Bad Website..

Site #1- http://thebadwebsite.com
The name of this website basically sums up what I could say about this website.  I googled bad websites, and this was one of the many options I was able to find. The color scheme of this site is horrid, the fonts are too complex, and there are way too many links all over the home page. There are way too many distractions all over the site, which can frustrate the viewer. These distractions (not including the neon green background, or the random squares of highlighter bright colors around the site) are the pictures that are completely irrelevant to anything. I think what annoys me most about this website are the countless links that are on the website. These links need to be organized into a much neater way to make it easy for one to navigate the website. When I went to actually click on one of the link’s, it was highlighted and crossed out, which annoyed me a lot because I couldn’t read what I was about to click on. Imagine, trying to read this every time you scrolled over a link. Not fun. I could go on for days about the negatives of this website, but the one positive thing from this website is that it was created this way on purpose (at least, I hope) to give new web designers a VERY clear idea of what not to do when designing a website.

The Good Website..

Site #2- http://toaststudios.ca
This website is my sister’s photography site. She focuses mainly on wedding photography, and has shot weddings for a few years. Just recently, her and her husband decided to start their own business, toast studios. She didn’t hire anyone to make the site for her, she put it together by herself using only a template she found online. The website is very simple, which I really like. With a simple white background and simple font, the only real color comes from the box that frames the pictures, and highlights the tabs. When you go to the homepage, a slide show is given of a few  pictures which I find interesting to look at. It gives the viewer a chance to see some of her work before they go through the site. I find this website very well-organized, and there are facebook and twitter icons at the bottom of the homepage so anyone can instantly go to the facebook group, or the twitter page. Relatively, I am a simple person; and the simplicity of this website is what keeps me coming back to it.

Assignment 1, Step 1

1) What does your current digital footprint says about you?
My digital footprint doesn’t say too much about me. When i googled Julia Rao, the only thing on the first page that was related to me was my profile found on the Ryerson Rams website. There was also a profile i apparently created on linkedin.com. That only says when and where i attended high school. A few facebook accounts came up, but none of them were mine (possibly because of my security settings). What was interesting to me was the number of executive positions and high end jobs with different companies that showed up when i googled my name.

2) Would you want an employer or teacher to see that? What do you want it to show and say?

Yes, I would want to my employer or teacher to see that. Being on the Ryerson Rams website shows that i am involved in the school, and am a hard worker because it is a varsity sport. I wouldn’t mind getting rid of the linkedin website, because it doesn’t benefit me in any way.  As i get older, and get more experience in the workplace, i want my digital footprint to be bigger, but i want it to be true, and very positive. During my four years at ryerson, i hope some of my work will make it to the internet. If i want to go into advertising/design, it would be good to have some of my work easily accessible for future employers.
